Pressley Statement on Three-Year Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

BOSTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued the following statement on the three-year anniversary of the January 6th insurrection.

“Three years ago, America came dangerously close to losing it all, and today our democracy is still threatened as it was on that damning day in our nation’s history.

“After conspiring to attack our democracy and overthrow the results of the 2020 election, Donald Trump has continued to spread lies, incite violence, and embolden violent, organized white supremacists—all while seeking the highest office in the land. Republicans in Congress, many of whom aided and abetted this insurrection, have sought to rollback civil rights and undermine public faith in our government by operating with chaos and confusion. And we have yet to see meaningful accountability for those who enabled this shameful insurrection.

“As we reflect on January 6th, remember the lives lost, and hold space for the trauma it caused, the Department of Justice must continue to pursue accountability, judges must prevent trial delays, and we must take steps to root out white supremacy in all its forms. As we approach the 2024 election and certification process, it is imperative that we protect our sacred voting rights, support our election workers, and prevent the former occupant of the White House from ever holding public office again.

“Democracy won the battle that day, but the war against it is still being waged daily. I’ll keep working to govern like our democracy depends on it, because it does.”
