Rep. Pressley Named to Democratic Steering and Policy Committee
Powerful Committee is Responsible for Appointing Members to Committee Seats and Shaping Caucus Priorities
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) has been elected by acclamation to represent members of the New England Congressional delegation on the powerful House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
“The New England delegation’s diversity of lived experiences, ideological views, and policy priorities are our strength, and I look forward to uplifting our collective voices and ensuring our region is strongly represented at every decision-making table,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “With more than three decades in public service, I have always prided myself in my ability to build coalitions and sit at the table with anyone in pursuit of justice. As Region 12’s representative, I plan to do just that to continue delivering for our communities and empower every member of our delegation to do the same. I’m grateful to Congresswoman Trahan for her leadership and to Ranking Member Neal and our colleagues for their support.”
“The Massachusetts delegation has a long history on the most storied Committees in Congress, always punching above our size with our legislative achievements and leadership, and putting us in the best position to deliver for our constituents,” said Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard E. Neal, Dean of the Delegation. “Our own Congresswoman Pressley will now proudly represent the Commonwealth and the New England region on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee and play a key role in shaping the Caucus’s priorities. As a seasoned legislator and senior leader, she will be a force in securing Committee seats for Region 12, and I’m grateful for her service to her colleagues and to all New Englanders.”
“Congresswoman Pressley is a tireless advocate for the values we hold dear here in Massachusetts, and she has a tremendous track record of putting pen to paper on legislation to address the issues affecting families across the region,” said Congresswoman Lori Trahan. “Congresswoman Pressley is the perfect person to fill this role on the Steering and Policy Committee to ensure members of the New England Delegation continue to serve on committees that are key to delivering for the unique needs of our constituents.”
The Steering and Policy Committee is responsible for appointing members of the House Democratic Caucus to committee seats and shaping caucus priorities. The Steering and Policy Committee is considered an extension of House Democratic Leadership and also considers candidates for committee leadership and votes to provide recommendations to the full caucus.
Congresswoman Pressley succeeds Congresswoman Lori Trahan (MA-03) as representative for Region 12, which covers the New England delegation. Trahan was recently elected to serve as Co-Chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.
Rep. Pressley has served on the House Financial Services Committee since taking office in 2019, where she has worked to advance policies and investments that affirm housing as a human right, close the racial wealth gap, transform our credit reporting system, protect consumers from predatory debt collection practices, sound the alarm on systemic climate risk, and more.
Earlier this month, Rep. Pressley was re-appointed to the House Oversight Committee, where she has participated in historic hearings on issues such as childhood trauma, abortion access, Medicare for All, DC statehood, maternal health justice, and more.
