Statement from Rep. Pressley on House Vote to Impeach Donald Trump
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) released the following statement after the House vote to impeach Donald Trump for incitement of insurrection.
“Ten days ago, my colleagues and I raised our right hands and swore an oath to protect our nation from all threats – foreign and domestic. Today, we upheld that oath by voting on a bipartisan basis to impeach Donald J. Trump for inciting a coordinated, deadly, white supremacist attack on the United States Capitol that endangered the lives of lawmakers and Congressional staff, and our very democracy.
“Donald Trump continues to be the most pressing threat to our democracy and our national security. Every day that he remains in office poses a grave threat to the American people. The House has carried out our solemn duty to impeach him, and now our colleagues in the Senate must act with the urgency this moment demands to convict and remove him and bar him from seeking elected office ever again.
“History will forever remember Donald Trump as the twice-impeached President who led one of the most cruel and corrupt administrations in American history. Following today’s vote, the House must undertake immediate, comprehensive and transparent investigations into the harrowing white supremacist attacks that took place on January 6 to understand how these violent extremists were able to breach our Capitol, the help they may have had from the inside, and what must be done to ensure an attack like this can never happen again. Our work to protect our democracy continues.”
Within hours of Tuesday’s attack, Rep. Pressley called for the impeachment and removal of Donald Trump for the role he played in inciting the violence. Last week, she introduced Articles of Impeachment in partnership with Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05). Rep. Pressley was also the first Member of Congress to formally call for Congressional investigations into the attack on the Capitol. In 2019, she was among the first members of Congress to call for his impeachment. Pressley has been a leading voice on the House Committee on Oversight & Reform on issues of white supremacy terrorism and racism in America.
