Rep. Pressley Joins Lawmakers & Advocates to Introduce Roe v. Wade Resolution

WASHINGTON – Today, in response to the restrictive and dangerous anti-abortion laws passed in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Utah and Ohio, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) joined advocates to rally in support of reproductive justice. The National #StopTheBans Day of Action convened advocates and activists from around the country to protest against these unconstitutional attempts to overturn Roe v. Wade and strip away a person’s right to comprehensive healthcare.

During the rally, Congresswoman Pressley announced a concurring resolution that she will introduce today to reaffirm Congress’s support for the landmark Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, and an individual’s constitutional right to exercise their reproductive autonomy. She also called for the Committee on Oversight and Reform to open an investigation into the systemic attempts of government to strip away the liberties of women. Since the start of 2019, anti-abortion legislation has been filed in 45 states, despite the fact that 73% of Americans support for abortion access and Roe v. Wade.

Last week, Congresswoman Pressley was named Chair of the Abortion Access Task Force, a prominent taskforce within the House Pro-Choice Caucus. In this role, Congresswoman Pressley will continue to fight back against lawmakers who remain emboldened in their efforts to block access to healthcare and reproductive freedom.

“There is nothing wrong with righteous rage,” said Congresswoman Pressley. “Women are here to shake the tables, to be the truth tellers, to be the justice seekers, to be the preservers of democracy. This nation was grown in the wombs of women and our rights are not up for debate. Our liberty, our humanity, our bodily autonomy is not the government’s to shackle. No institution will be between us and our inalienable rights.”

The resolution is cosponsored by Representatives Barbara Lee (D-CA), Diana DeGette (D-CO), Judy Chu (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Norma Torres (D-CA), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Ro Khanna(D-CA), Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), Donna Shalala (D-FL), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Jackie Speier (D-CA), Kathleen Rice(D-NY), Gil Cisneros(D-CA), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), Doris Matsui (D-CA), Katie Porter (D-CA), Val Demings (D-FL), Alma Adams (D-NC), Kim Schrier (D-WA), Grace Napolitano (D-CA), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX), Lois Frankel (D-FL), Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Rick Larsen (D-WA), Chris Pappas (D-NH), Jim Himes (D-CT), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Grace Meng (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), John Larson (D-CT), Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Scott Peters (D-CA), Julia Brownley (D-CA), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Suzan Delbene (D-WA), William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Adam Smith (D-WA), Donald M.
