WASHINGTON – In a statement issued today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) applauded the House’s passage of H.R. 5665, the Combatting International Islamophobia Act, led by Representatives Ilhan Omar (MN-05) and Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), and reiterated her call for the House to pass her resolution to remove Rep. Lauren Boebert (CO-03) from her committee assignments in response to her anti-Muslim conduct and rhetoric. 

“Islamophobia has no place in any society and must be rooted out wherever it exists. The House’s passage today of the Combatting International Islamophobia Act is a welcome and critical step forward in our efforts to root out Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate globally, and I am grateful to Congresswomen Omar and Schakowsky for their leadership on this meaningful and important legislation. 

“But make no mistake—our work is far from finished. As the past few weeks have reminded us, we continue to face the threat of Islamophobia domestically and the halls of Congress are no exception. Nearly three weeks have passed and we have yet to see meaningful accountability for the repeated use of hateful, racist and Islamophobic tropes by a Member of Congress towards our Muslim colleague. I continue to call for House leadership to take up my resolution to remove Rep. Boebert from her committee assignments and condemn her dangerous behavior. 

“Inaction is to be complicit in Islamophobia and the trafficking of hate right here in the halls of Congress, and we must act before more lives are put at risk.” 

Last week, Rep. Pressley led her colleagues in introducing a resolution to remove Rep. Boebert from her committee assignments and held a press conference to discuss the need for real accountability.
