Rep. Pressley Blasts Trump & Musk Attack on NIH Funding

15% Cap on Indirect Costs in NIH Funding Will Disproportionately Harm Massachusetts 7th, a Hub for Higher Ed and Cutting-Edge Research

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s harmful cuts to National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to support hospitals, universities, and research institutions conducting lifesaving research. The Administration announced last week that it will cap reimbursement rates from the NIH at 15% for expenses that support research operations.

The Massachusetts 7th Congressional District is a global hub for higher education and cutting-edge research and will be disproportionately harmed by the funding cuts.

“This is a reckless attack on science, innovation, and the generations of people who stand to benefit from NIH investments in our collective public health. As a global hub for higher education and cutting-edge research, this will be especially harmful for the Massachusetts 7th and will quite literally rob people of their lives, threaten thousands of jobs, and curtail the progress we’ve made in improving health outcomes.

“My team and I are talking to hospitals and institutions that stand to be impacted imminently here in the Massachusetts 7th. I can’t emphasize enough the harm this would cause and urge the Administration to immediately change course.”
