WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued the following statement on the House’s vote to elect Mike Johnson as Speaker. The Congresswoman voted for Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker.

“Mike Johnson is absolutely unfit to serve as Speaker. He is a Trump pawn who worked to overturn the 2020 election. Johnson is also one of the most egregious anti-abortion extremists in Congress and he has written bills that are outright attacks on our LGBTQ+ siblings.

“His presence in Congress is a threat to our democracy, and the consequences of him wielding the Speaker’s gavel will be dire. He is both ineffective and harmful, the worst kind of paradox. He will only perpetuate and accelerate the cruelty, chaos, and confusion we have seen under this Republican majority.

“While Republicans remain divided and deeply disconnected from the people, I will never lose sight of those who sent me to Congress. I will work diligently with Democratic Leadership to fight for life-saving policies that center the people and protect our most vulnerable.”
