Pressley Statement on Vote to Remove McCarthy as Speaker

WASHINGTON — Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued a statement following the House’s vote to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House.

“Today I witnessed the iconic swearing-in of the third Black woman Senator in our nation’s history, Laphonza Butler. Moments later, I took a solemn vote to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker.

“Republicans in Congress are in disarray and deeply disconnected from the people. McCarthy was not fit to lead, nor does his party have a clear vision or path forward. The people who call this country home deserve a functional Congress.

“Today’s events illustrate the sharp contrast between the Democrats, who seek to govern and advance progress, and the Republicans, who continue to move with chaos and callous disregard for the people we represent.”
