WASHINGTON  – In honor of the 9^th anniversary of President Obama signing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) released the following statement:

“As we commemorate the 9^th anniversary of the ACA becoming law, I am thinking of the patient activists, the organizers from the disability community, and all those who have taken to the streets and the halls of Congress to fight for health care as a basic human right. Since its implementation, the ACA has provided critical protections for the 130 million people in the U.S. living with pre-existing conditions, including nearly 3 million residents of Massachusetts. Because of the ACA, Massachusetts’ uninsured rate among non-elderly adults fell from 5.1% in 2010 to 3.3% in 2017.

“I firmly believe that people don’t live in checked boxes. We live in nuance. We live in intersectionality. And those are the types of policies we must develop, especially as it relates to health care. I will continue to fight for policies that protect and defend the ACA; safeguard protections for pre-existing conditions and women’s health; decrease drug costs; and ensure that we are developing new solutions as we work towards Medicare for All. No one should have to face financial ruin while they’re fighting for their life and livelihood.”
